PHP Programmer

I am currently looking for a PHP programmer to continue development with me on Earlymiser. While I can probably continue development by myself, I would like to continue with someone else on the team.

Canonical URLs Revisited.

About a year a go I posted about a little problem that was more of an annoyance really.
canonical urls. This was a problem where you had to make sure your link building efforts were consistent and always had the same URL. I thought a year ago something like shouldn’t have been the problem that it actually was. Well Google has finally set their own set of tools at Google’s Webmaster Tools and one of the tools is a simple tool allowing you to tell Google what URL to use for your site.

Has John Chow lost faith in AGLOCO?

I have started reading John Chow’s blog largely because he’s a pretty good writer and I always like reading good writers. I really wish he would do more reviews for The Tech Zone. One thing I have noticed though, John’s recent posts about Agloco have toned down the rhetoric quite a bit.

Form Design

Here’s a basic question for you. When you design a new site what country is your target audience in? Every site has a target audience in mind when you develop it (what you say you don’t have a target audience and everyone will use your service? Simply not true). When you design a site – you should have a target audience or at least specific use stories in mind when designing. Here are some use stories I did for Earlymiser – price comparison

Sunday Link Roundup

In the Sunday Roundup I cover areas that I find interesting in the blogosphere. This week it’s comment spam – which seems to plague every single CMS platform. There are a number of ways people are fighting comment spam. On the Movable Type front here’s a link to the MT wiki on fighting comment spam in MT. Here’s how Drupal deals with comment spam. There’s also the comment spam service Akismet and a link to one blogger’s experience with Akismet

Movable Type vs. Drupal

I am preparing to upgrade and redo two Drupal installations this weekend. Already I am beginning to dread the preparation. While I have have spoken about how much I liked Drupal, it’s apparent that they are going through growing pains and should re-assess their coding practices.

Windows Live Shopping is closed

Brian over at comparisonengines.com has a pretty good write-up. My guess is that Windows Live Shopping pretty quickly found out that they weren’t going to have any traction in the marketplace to support the size of the team running it. Good for me and Early Miser – compare everywhere. If I really had to take a stab at why they closed I suspect they found that many of the Live features didn’t really add to the customer experience.

Press Release Tips

Press releases are a great way to build incoming one way links. They are also a way to get the press and blogs writing about your product or site. Of course most web marketers know next to nothing about how to write a press release or even how to interact with journalists. They don’t take the time to learn how to really pitch a story to a journalist or what’s even the best way to approach a journalist. That’s too bad because just learning a few simple rules can mean the difference between getting a story written about your project and a journalist putting you on a spam blacklist. Let’s go some of those rules so your next press release campaign can be a success.

Upgrade Complete. Mostly.

I have to hand to the guys over at Six Apart the latest version of Movable Type (3.34) is a great improvement over the previous version I was running. Updating and changing templates was a snap. I now use the the Style Catcher plugin for managing styles and it’s a great help. I will be making changes to the templates over the next week but this template is a great improvement over the template “inspired” by Craig Newmark.

Upgrading Templates

I will be upgrading templates in the next few hours. If you see major breakage on the site – that’s the reason ;-).
