Self Psychology Theory

Heinz Kohut developed the theory of Self Psychology at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. As it stands, Self Psychology explains psychopathology as developmental needs that have been interrupted or unmet. There are several concepts that are crucial aspects of this theory, including empathy, mirroring, idealizing and the tripolar self. Though Self Psychology asserts the Freudian concepts of drive and conflict, these concepts are understood as a completely separate framework.

Kohut first came to psychoanalysis by studying neurology and psychiatry; he loved the theories of analysis and immortalized Freud for his primitive concepts. In the 1960s, Heinz Kohut began to explore the boundaries of narcissism and called his findings the “psychology of the self.” In 1971, Kohut published his work, “The Analysis of the Self,” arguing the new theory as a more patient-based analytical strategy; if therapy was to be successful, the patient needed to address foremost the self.

Kohut established four developmental stages of the human self:

1. Nuclear — human babies are born with this; it is a biologically determined psychological identity. It takes no work; it is thrust upon each individual and begins the journey of the human self.

2. Virtual– the nuclear self meets this; it is the self as seen in the minds of the parents. The child has no control over the emergence of this self, as it is the one that is impressed on the child by its caregivers.

3. Cohesive — the point where the interaction of the previous selves leads the child to regulate and organize the activities of the ego, where along the way:

4. Grandiose – an identity that sees oneself as at the epicenter of everything; as Freud had often stated, children find themselves to be the center of the universe until reaching a certain age, where others emerge and settle comfortably within their world. This self is struggling on the verge of narcissistic rage.

Self Psychology theory has many real-world applications and has made grand strides in the way of psychoanalysis and therapy. Many supporters of the theory have pinpointed the relationship between Jung and Freud as an example of Self Psychology theory at work. Carl Jung idealized Freud, who saw Jung as an idealized version of himself. Jung had to assert himself as an individual, emerging as an independent theorist apart from Freud, conquering his personal self and proving the therapeutic nature behind this theory.

5 Reasons to Reconsider Getting Into Affiliate Marketing

This is probably one of the worst articles for someone like me to write, but I think it will probably save a lot of you some money and frustration. So in the interest of others, here goes.

The first reason has got to be that this is not an easy job. It takes hours of dedication, research and some skill too. All internet marketers will tell you it is super easy, blah, blah, and blah. IT IS NOT. It only becomes easy after months of learning and trial and error, and then it will still take a lot of your time. These people forget how lost they felt when they first started out in this business.

The second reason is that when you start out, you will probably buy a few products, that promises to do all the work for you. The only thing these products do for you is make you poorer, and the guy selling it richer. I come back to this point so many times. If you are going to buy products online, then only buy products that sell information. I equate this to going to school. If you pay money for education, then at least you got something for your buck.

The third reason is that you will probably buy an info product now, and you got there by searching for “make money online”, or some “how to work from home”, or such keyword. I can guarantee you that the first thing they will tell you is to re- advertise the product you just bought. THIS IS HARD. The “make money online” niche is probably the most competitive niche out there. Getting in there when you start from scratch is near impossible, as you are competing with seasoned marketers.

The fourth reason is that if you are middle aged and not used to school, and don’t have the drive to study anymore, DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY. This takes more studying than I have done in my final year at school.

The last, and maybe the most important, is that if you don’t understand that it takes money to make money, then you can just give up now. Sure, the potential gains are pretty attractive, but you only see how much the guy got in. You don’t see how much he spent promoting these products in the first place.

In conclusion, all I can ad is that I hope you take all these things into consideration before you jump in on the deep end. If you can see yourself avoiding these pitfalls, then maybe you have a shot

New HealthLeaders Media Survey: Greater Risk, Patient Volume Driving Surge in Healthcare Analytics Use

The survey reveals that there is a big difference between the way that organizations apply analytics now and the way they will in the near future. Healthcare IT will move beyond siloed transactional systems for retrospective analysis toward more quantitative toolkits that use data to draw predictive and relational conclusions.

“The analytics work that we will do in the future will require deeper competencies and be at a different level of discovery than today’s work,” says George T. Hickman, FCHIME, LCHIME, LFHIMSS, CPHIMS, CHCIO, executive vice president and chief information officer of Albany Medical Center.

One of the top clinical applications of analytics is to improve quality, outweighing analytics for the purpose of risk stratification and population health. Still, in three years, the percentage of organizations using analytics to assess population health needs is expected to jump 31% to include nearly 80% of all health systems, underscoring the emerging importance of population management under value-based care.

“To care for populations with similar diseases requires us to be fluent in the best evidence-based medicine,” says Bill Bunting, director of healthcare solutions for EMC. “We must understand the progress of patient groups with the same conditions, just as we must understand the prevalent health needs of our patient base.”

There are several key types of patient-related data that healthcare systems expect to draw on for analytics activity. In the top three are clinical data from EHR (95%), patient demographics (91%), and aggregated EHR and patient claims data (85%). But even as dependence on EHR data remains strong, Hickman suggests that the context will start to shift.

“At this point, electronic health records should start feeling like transaction systems, not necessarily at the center of the universe where we often put them,” he says. “If you really want to focus on population

health, you have to have a healthy electronic health system environment supporting that effort. So let’s focus on all the other systems and solutions we’re going to need to be building for the future.”

The path to this future will certainly be rife with challenges. Among the top data-related challenges identified by healthcare leaders, integrating clinical and business data, establishing/improving EHR interoperability, and improving data accuracy are among the top.

Other compelling statistics from the report include:


78% of healthcare leaders will be using analytics to assess population health needs within three years (vs. 47% currently).
62% expect to be using analytics to assess care partners’ efficiency and quality within three years.
Data integration (63%), interoperability (47%), and data accuracy (40%) are the top data-related analytics challenges.
75% expect to begin or increase investments in improving the quality of data in the next year.
52% cite overcoming insufficient skills in analytics as a top tactical challenge.
