Binge Eating: A Personal Story
Before her life started unraveling, Elaine had a lot of acquaintances, although not many close friends. She was active in her church and her block association, and she thought of herself as being well liked by a lot of people, but when in her depression she began to withdraw from the world, her telephone stopped ringing. None of her so-called friends even bothered to find out if she was all right, and that filled her with despair, thinking back on all the phone calls she had made to people in her community just to check up on them and say hello. Several years before, the family had actually gone to the expense of putting in another line because she was on the telephone so much. Now when she returned home after being away for several hours and the digit on her answering machine still registered zero, she would sit by the telephone and weep.

The only person who kept calling was Margaret, a woman she had met in Weight Watchers. One day Mar garet called her and offered to drive her to a meeting that night. Elaine said sweetly, “I tried Weight Watchers with you before, remember? It just didn’t work for me.”
“1 don’t go there anymore,” said Margaret. “I go to a
new meeting, at the Civic Center, and it has really been working for me. Please come just once and try it.”
Elaine begged off. She was not in the mood to start a new diet.
Elaine started having difficulty getting up in the morning and was running out of excuses for being late at work. She used up her sick days and then her vacation days. Finally, her department head called her in and said in a concerned voice, “Are you having difficulties at home?” Elaine burst into tears, hating herself for crying in front of this woman who had gotten the promotion that should have been hers.
The department head said she would be allowed to continue in her present position if she saw the staff psychologist. At first Elaine was furious that she had to confide in a total stranger in order to keep her job, but after a few weeks she found herself more and more willing to open up and talk about her problems. Nevertheless, the bingeing went on with a vengeance.
