This week, Google released three new tools that are very neat examples of the types of web apps that experienced web developers can create.

 Google Flight Search

Google Flight Search is Google’s new tool to combat discount travel services such as Expedia or Travelocity, as well as many others.

It integrates into the existing Google search page and automatically understands if you are looking for flight or travel information in the same way that Google Maps understands location based inquiries.

From a design standpoint however, there are some really notable features. First is the simplicity. Google is well known for creating applications that are very user friendly and easy to understand. They know that their audience will be extremely diverse and so they have done an excellent job creating a tool that is easy to use.

The second notable feature is the ability to discover new flights or destinations. This helps a traveler find flights for a nearby airport that might be cheaper or faster. There is also a quick graphical display that helps users find the cheapest flights by day of the week, since certain days might be significantly cheaper than other days.

The last notable feature that we’ll note here is how efficiently it runs. Of course it may depend a little bit on connection speed, but even on slow connections it runs remarkably well. Here are a few tips that will help you in choosing a webmaster you can trust, is efficient and is capable of the tasks given him.

First, when looking into a webmaster, ask for referrals. If they have other happy customers that are willing to be references for this webmaster, that’s a good thing. However, make sure it’s not their mother-in-law or someone close to them. Biased opinions won’t benefit you at all. Many webmasters will have testimonials or feedback from their happy customers on their business website. However, do a quick search for their company name to see if you can dig up any negative feedback from others who may have had a horrible experience.

Second, if a webmaster offers to transfer your domain name and website into their control, run! Why? Well, many webmasters have hosting accounts that can host multiple websites on them. So what they do is transfer your domain name and website files over to their hosting plan and then charge you a monthly fee. This fee varies with each webmaster. However, once you allow them to do this, that domain name and website becomes their property. If something were to go wrong, then you’d ultimately loose it all. Although their intentions in the beginning were good, the consequences of a webmaster/website owner relationship could be devastating.

Third, seek out a webmaster that can be reached by telephone. If you have never spoken to them over the phone or can’t seem to reach them by phone, move on the the next one. I’ve heard the horror stories of website owners not being able to reach their trusted webmaster when their site needs to be updated or it’s in error. But, when they finally do reach them after leaving several messages, the webmaster says that they no longer do that.

Yes, that really happens…and it happens a lot. Your future webmaster must be accessible.

Fourth, efficiency in work ethic is a must. Find a webmaster that can commit to making the updates you’ve requested in a timely and efficient manner. Standard updates should be completed within a 48 hour period. If a larger task is at hand, then get a commitment for a time of completion.

Fifth, conduct and interview. Make sure you can trust them. When you speak to them, do you believe them? Do they sound honest and full of integrity?

Sixth, trust your gut! When it all comes down to it, a potential webmaster can answer all of your questions perfectly and even promise you the world, but if your gut tells you no, follow it!

This article may make you a bit skeptical about choosing a webmaster, and that’s not my intention. There are more good webmasters than there are bad ones. But if you follow some of these tips, you’ll end up having a good experience with whomever you choose.

Google has released a new Transparency Report outlining censorship levels around the world.

The report details how the US government asked Google for user information 4,287 times in the first six months of this year, while the UK government issued 1,000 similar requests to the search giant over the same period.

Removal requests mapped

Google’s new maps and tools allow users to check on an individual country to see how many of these removal requests were either completely or partly complied with by the company.

Google has also included a traffic graph which shows its services around the world, along with details on traffic outages caused by individual governments blocking access.

Google’s public policy head Scott Rubin said of the initiative: “Last year after the Iranian elections access to the internet was cut off and we saw a sudden drop in traffic to YouTube.”

Civil liberty and censorship

Civil liberty groups have applauded the move, although want Google to go even further and provide more detailed data on the nature of government take-down request.

“I think it is a tremendous initiative and it would be helpful if other networks could do the same thing,” said law professor and Open Rights Group representative Lilian Edwards.

“I think there will be some embarrassing data and it will vary from country to country. The UK is neither the best or the worst,” she said.

“It would be interesting to see whether these take-downs refer to libel, surveillance and intercepts or the content industries. The more data we have the more useful it will be.

“It would, for example, be interesting to compare Google’s data with published UK surveillance requests.”

China absent from report

David Drummond, Google’s chief legal officer notes on the Google blog: “When Google’s services are blocked or filtered, we can’t serve our users effectively. That’s why we act every day to maximize free expression and access to information.

“Free expression is one of our core values. We believe that more information means more choice, more freedom and ultimately more power for the individual.”

Interestingly, data on information requests from China is not contained in the current Transparency Report.

“Chinese officials consider censorship demands to be state secrets so we cannot disclose that information at this time,” explained Google.

If a forum only has one or two rooms or topics about which it offers for discussion, then it likely won’t get people to participate. But if it offers a variety of topics for discussion including some fun rooms, then it will be a much better forum and more fun and engaging.

Spam and abuse control. Every forum will eventually run into two things: Spam and Bullying. Annoying behavior can rear its ugly head in a number of ways. Bullying is an extreme example.

Trolling is perhaps the most popular. A good webmaster forum will have measures in place to take care of people who use the forum for annoying purposes. And it will be able to control spam. If you get involved in a forum that is full of spam, it won’t be fun for anyone.

Ease of navigation. Webmaster forums have to have the basics down or they’re just not worth considering. Navigation is one of those basics, the fundamentals of the Internet. Make sure the forum is easy to enter and move around in.

Frequency of posts. Good webmaster forums will have people who respond quickly to urgent needs and questions posed to the community. Moderators are there to keep the forum civil. But if you have an emergency, then the moderators must understand that a prompt answer may be necessary. Frequency of posts and responses is critical to running a good webmaster forum.

Not all webmaster forums are created equal. Some are great. Some are bad. But most are somewhere in between. Judge a webmaster forum by these criteria and join only the very best.
