How to repair MySQL database when the Error 145 occurs

In MySQL databases, the MyISAM table is the default database engine, which provides a variety of functions to manage fields and indexes. These tables are best used for table locking, which makes it very useful while performing real-time transactions on the websites. However, when these tables get corrupt due to any random reason it makes the trading done on the web very insecure. In such cases, you should try to repair MySQL table using some appropriate methods. If none of the methods succeed, then I would recommend you to use a third-party MySQL Repair software to repair MySQL database.

Taking a practical case into consideration in which the following error message is displayed while you are working on a MyISAM table in the MySQL database:

“MySQL error code 145 = Table was marked as crashed and should be repaired”

Cause:
The root cause of this problem is that the MyISAM table has corrupted as there is no more space in it to hold more data.

Resolution:

To overcome this MyISAM table corruption, you need to perform MySQL repair. For this, you should perform the following steps:

Create a backup copy of the database in case something goes wrong during the MySQL recovery.
Stop the mysqld server by killing the process in the Task Manager.
Run the following command to repair the index file to perform quick MySQL recovery:
myisamchk -r -q
If that does not work, then try the following command to perform a detailed scan and repair, if any, of the MyISAM table.
myisamchk –safe-recover
if the previous method also fails, then create a new blank database using the following commands:
shell> mysql db_name
mysql> SET autocommit=1;
mysql> TRUNCATE TABLE tbl_name;
mysql> quit
copy the contents of problem database in the new one.
Restart the mysqld server to check if the problem has been resolved or not.

If the problem is still not resolved, then you must use a third-party MySQL repair software to repair MySQL database. MySQL database is one of most used open-sourced database, which is used by numerous users over the world. Being a free, reliable, secure, and fast-paced database system, it is highly preferred as the backend support for numerous high-traffic and popular web-based applications such as Flickr, Google, You Tube, Yahoo!, etc. For different types of storage needs, it offers different kinds of database engines such as InnoDB, MyISAM, etc. However, at times these tables do get corrupt due to various reasons including virus infections, abrupt system shutdown, bugs in the current MySQL version, etc. In such cases, there can be different methods to provide the workaround. If these methods do not work, then you should use a third-party MySQL repair software to repair MySQL database.

 

Consider a situation in which you start the MySQL 5.1 server by starting the ‘mysqld’ process. However, the following error message is displayed and the server does not start:

 

“Default storage engine is not available.”

 

You reinstall the MySQL server without removing the data directory. Next time, when you try to access any MySQL database table, you are unable to do so. The following error message is displayed this time around:

 

“ERROR 1146 (42S02): Table ‘test.no_such_table’ doesn’t exist”

 

Here, 1146 refers to the error code.

42SO2 refers to the five-character SQL state.

 

Cause:

Such erroneous situation occurs when the MySQL table that you are using is corrupt.

 

Resolution:

To repair MySQL database in such case, you should perform either of the following methods:

Use updated backup: First of all, you should check if there is any clean and updated backup of the MySQL table. If yes, then restore the table with the backup.
Use Repair Table tool: If the backup is not up-to-date, then you should try to repair MySQL table using the Repair Table tool with either ‘QUICK’ or ‘EXTENDED’ repair clause. This tool can be used in the following syntax:

REPAIR [NO_WRITE_TO_BINLOG | LOCAL] TABLE

tbl_name [, tbl_name] …

[QUICK] [EXTENDED] [USE_FRM]

 

The situation will be resolved using the aforementioned solution, however if the problem persists then this situation calls for the use of a third-party MySQL recovery software. These MySQL repair tools are highly interactive and the use of non-destructive repairing mechanisms enable easy and safe recovery of MySQL tables.

MySQL tables are the most critical component of the database that allows you to store data in an organized manner. Thus, you can easily manipulate them and get effective query results. But sometimes, these tables give unexpected results and error messages. The reason could be table corruption, which needs to be restored from backup. However, if backup falls short of restoring data, you should use commercial MySQL Database Recovery applications.

You might receive the below error message in mysqld error log:

“[ERROR] Got error 127 when reading table “

You receive a series of such error messages.

Cause

The prime cause of this error message to occur is table corruption. A MySQL table might get corrupt due to any of these reasons:

• mysqld process is killed unexpectedly
• Hardware issues
• MySQL code or MyISAM/InnoDB code is suffering from bugs
• An external program and server is modifying the same table at the same time
• Unexpected system shutdown

Solution

To correct table corruption, you should follow these steps in order:

• You should first check the table for corruption using CHECK TABLE command. To run the command, make sure that the server is running. This check is used with following syntax:

CHECK TABLE tablename [options]

Here, options used are FAST, QUICK, MEDIUM etc.

• If CHECK TABLE command gives corruption errors, you should repair it using REPAIR TABLE command. Before running the command, ensure that about twice as much disk space as of affected table is present on disk. The syntax is as:

REPAIR TABLE tablename [options]

Here, options used are QUICK, EXTENDED etc.

• Again, check the table for corruption.
• If table still remains corrupt, you should delete the damaged table if you have a valid database backup.
• In case, no database backup is available or it seems to be damaged or incomplete, make use of third-party MySQL Recovery utilities. These software are specifically designed to scan damaged MySQL databases and correct corruption errors. Since Oracle’s acquisition of Sun several years ago, it now offers certifications for both its flagship database, Oracle, and also for MySQL. If you are looking to get an ‘Oracle’ database certification, which of the two makes sense to pursue?  There is value in gaining database administrator or developer certifications in either the Oracle or MySQL databases. That said, there are significant differences in the directions that the two databases are likely to take your career.

MySQL is a free database. It is very commonly used as part of a Web site with a database back-end. Most Web hosting services offer MySQL as an option to anyone hosting on their site. MySQL works very well for database-driven websites using PHP or equivalent application programming interfaces. Because the database is freely available, it has a huge number of small to medium companies using it. That said, because most of them are using it specifically because it is a low-cost option, many of the companies that use it may not be interested in paying for a database administrator to maintain it. There are certainly positions available for MySQL database administrators, just a smaller percentage in proportion to the number of installations when compared to Oracle. That said, developers with MySQL and PHP knowledge are in significant demand to build and maintain the websites that use it as a backend.

The Oracle RDBMS is definitely not a free database. Licensing costs for large multi-processor clusters can be hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. For this and other reasons, the companies that use it tend to have enterprise-class databases. They expect to have a dedicated database administrator to ensure their data is secure and properly maintained. The total number of installs may be lower than that of MySQL, but a much higher percentage of those will have a dedicated administrator. Of the enterprise class databases, Oracle has the largest market share and there are almost always positions available for experienced DBAs and developers.

Periodically, I check the local job listings and compare those looking for MySQL professionals to those looking for Oracle professionals. The results are interesting. As a general rule, there are a larger number of listings for MySQL, in particular for developers that also know PHP and scripting languages such as Perl and Python. However, the positions for Oracle DBAs and developers offer significantly higher salaries. That said, companies hiring for Oracle positions generally want candidates to have several years of experience. A common complaint from new Oracle professionals is that getting the first job is difficult. If you are contemplating a career working with databases, you might consider getting certified in MySQL as a way to get into the field, then become certified in Oracle as a way to move up to a position that pays more. Do not just go by this article, though. Do your own research into the local job market to see which option will work best for you.
