MySQL database corruption results in error messages that are difficult to overcome. Such error messages are a threat to any organization and can result in huge loses. These loses can only be prevented if in case the DBA of that company has maintained a complete backup of the entire database. While the reasons for corruption in most cases are unknown, the solution for most of the cases remains the same. To repair any corrupted database, a DBA initially needs to check the level of corruption. Once the level is identified, the DBA needs to run the inbuilt repair command. These two steps help the database administrator to overcome database corruption and access the table records in most cases. But, there might be few instances where the database remains in corruption state and the database administrator might lose all the database records. For such cases, there is a solution named MySQL database repair tool.

The above situation occurred with me (a MySQL database administrator) when I encountered the below error message while trying open my database:

“135: No more room in record file”

The database records went missing and I could see only this error message each time I tried to open my database. With no hope left, I executed the below commands to repair my database:

CHECK TABLE TABLENAME
REPAIR TABLE TABLENAME

However, when the above commands failed, I was in the state of shock. Then a friend of mine suggested me a using a MySQL repair utility.

After extensive search on Internet, I came across a utility that completely repaired my corrupted database and also allowed me to save the repaired database on my desired location.

Few advantages that I could figured out of this MySQL repair utility are:

The repair application did not provide any harm to the original database.
The MySQL database repair utility can be used by any user, irrespective of his/her technical knowledge.
The MySQL repair application can repair both MyISAM and InnoDB tables.
The repair utility also has a demo version, which is absolutely free.

After seeing all the above advantages, I know that every MySQL database user will at least use the free version of this utility. So guys, here was my experience of database corruption and the way to come over it. Hope this article helps you to overcome database corruption.

Oracle is one of the most sophisticated Relational Database Management System (RDBMS), which is totally platform independent. It is highly scalable, very secure, fast, and extremely reliable when it comes to dealing with OLTP (Online Transactions Processing) techniques and data warehouse applications thereby making Oracle a true enterprise solution. But as they say, nothing is perfect in this world. Similarly, the Oracle databases too can get corrupt that can make all the database operations come to a halt. These situations can arise due to various causes such as failure in the storage media, system corruption, etc. You should adopt various corrective methods to recover Oracle database. If the methods do not work, then you should use a third-party Oracle database recovery software to repair Oracle database.

Let us consider a scenario in which you have taken a cold backup of the Oracle database on which you are working and archived it. However, the database fails to open when you try to do so. The following error message is displayed in this regard:

“ORA-00353: log corruption near block string change string time string”

Cause:

Such problems can occur if the database has damaged or is corrupt. It can happen due to failure in the storage media.

Resolution:

In cases when the online redo logs are having such problems, then the databases should be opened with the ‘RESETLOGS’ option to recreate the online redo logs. Then, to resolve this peculiar problem by restoring the database, you should use the following steps:

Perform a normal shutdown using ‘SHUTDOWN NORMAL’.
Do a “STARTUP MOUNT” and “ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS;”
Use ‘UNTIL CANCEL’ recovery type if prompted for database recovery.
Apply all available archive and online redo logs.
Issue ‘CANCEL’ and reissue ‘ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS;’ command.
Perform a normal shutdown using ‘SHUTDOWN NORMAL’.
Remove the applied parameter.
Check the ALERT.LOG for errors after performing a database ‘STARTUP’.
Extract the data after rebuilding the complete database.

In case you are still not able to access the Oracle database, then you should use a third-party Oracle database recovery to recover Oracle database. These DBF recovery tools are read-only in nature that do not modify the existing database while performing the recovery.

What is Drizzle?

Drizzle is an open source database management system (DBMS) that has gotten a bit of attention lately primarily because some high profile names are behind it and because for many in the open source community it represents an essential break from Oracle. Simply put, Drizzle is a fork of the MySQL database being led by MySQL’s co-founder Monty Widenius. But Drizzle is actually much more than a fork of MySQL. It is a re-imagining of MySQL. Drizzle, not yet production ready, aims to be a lightweight database designed for the web and for cloud computing.

Drizzle will work very differently from MySQL. The developers are designing a microkernel style architecture in which various modules can be compiled in or loaded to extend the functionality. The end result is an extremely lightweight database geared for web backends and cloud computing. Drizzle will be able to handle concurrency which, as the developers point out, puts it somewhere between SQLite and MySQL.

The Drizzle project is also working towards an open and collaborative development model. Unlike MySQL, developers will hold the copyright to the code they contribute much like any other open source project. Drizzle will be licensed using the GPL version 2 license. Part of this decision was shaped by the license governing the existing MySQL code upon which Drizzle is based. Plugins can be written for Drizzle with any GPL compatible license. The licensing will be a welcome move to many open source advocates who are concerned about Oracle’s intentions for former Sun open source projects. Oracle’s recent lawsuit against Google has also created a lot of concern in the open source community about using MySQL and other Oracle projects.

Drizzle will be developed for Linux, Mac OS and both the Intel and Sparc versions of Solaris. There are no plans for Drizzle to run on Windows. The project team is limiting the platforms that Drizzle will run on in order to focus more on the application itself. While they do say that it will run on 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, their target platform is 64-bit multi-processor architectures.

Drizzle is using the InnoDB storage engine. It is being designed to run a limited number of field types with the focus being on “standard” types like blob, varchar, text, int, float, date, datetime, and a few others. Drizzle is not a SQL-compliant database and the project founders make it clear that it is not their intention for it to be. They clearly state that users should not expect Drizzle to be another MySQL.

The Drizzle project is off to a strong start. The project team has the coding standards and a guide available for those wanting to get involved in the development. There is already a decent sized code base but the project founders also provide the caveat that it is not production ready as many incompatible changes are still being made and are still planned. However, it is a very interesting project and has the potential to be the database of choice for cloud architectures like MySQL quickly became the database of choice for the web.
