Bob Parsons – Stop Whining

In this post Bob Parson’s goes on interminably about what a horrible practice “domain kiting” (Bob’s term, not mine) is. While I agree the practice as described might be annoying, it’s not the end of the world, nor are these domains “out of the public’s hands.”

Strangely Bob seems to have some strange idea that there are better uses of domains and buying up generic domains is “bad.” This is completely nonsensical. Because of trademark law almost all of these domains are generic and therefore not deserving of trademark protection. In the comments sections of Bob’s blog a bunch whiny folks go on about how their “domain” is taken. In 99% of these cases these are domains that they chose because of the same reason that someone else did, they are hoping for type in traffic. I am uncertain how one use of the domain is better than another. Here’s a hint folks when registering domains – make up a word. See the site you are at now? Thalasar is ENTIRELY a word I made up. As a result it has the strongest trademark and copyright protection available. Parking a domain isn’t an illegitimate activity. In fact it’s probably a net utility. Godaddy parks domains it’s customers’ register all the time, pocketing the revenue 100%. What practice is worse, owning a bunch of generic domains or placing ads on someone else’s domain and pocketing the revenue. You tell me Bob.
