Computer Slowing Down?

As I mentioned on my primary blog I recently installed a laptop at a local coffeeshop to operate as a internet cafe. Initially I was running Windows XP. This created a problem. After a while the machine naturally got corrupted and infested with spyware. This lead to the machine slowing down and nearly being impossible to use. I really wanted to use this machine again but it was nearly impossible. My computer was infested with pop-ups. How did I fix this virus and spyware infected machine? Read on.
It seemed hopeless. The machine had slowed to a crawl and just opening a single browser window slowed me down. I had expected problems but nothing on this scale. It's apparent that a number of people had installed a number of different spyware programs and it was going to be difficult to repair. I tried a number of different anti-virus programs from Nortons to McAfees. Nothing seemed to work.
